I’ve seen a lot of descriptions for gamification but I like this one best: “It makes hard stuff fun.”
That pretty much says it all. There’s a lot of hard stuff out there, and so much informational noise that is competing for our attention. So what could be friendlier and kinder to your audience than to engage them in play? But how to get started?
This may require some short-term regression. Close your eyes and think about what makes you happy. I don’t mean a new car or a promotion. I’m talking about small things. What makes you laugh? What makes you curious? What tickles your sense of fun?
Now, remove all your traditional communication ideas from your mind (temporarily) and consider what it takes to offer up some pure entertainment for your audience. The next step is to make the connection to actual work. How can you turn something laborious into something enjoyable?
Keep the goal of learning, but change how you approach the delivery of that learning. This will set you on the right track. The experts in this issue of CW will invite you to think about communication in an entirely different way. Are you open to that? Good.
Now let’s have some fun!...
