Preventive health screenings save lives. Through screenings, many life-threatening conditions can be discovered earlier, and their effects minimized. At UPS, employees covered under The UPS Flexible Benefits Plan are eligible for free preventive screenings. This includes:
- Annual physical
- Well-woman check-up
Despite these screenings being covered at 100 percent under the plan, many UPS employees were not taking advantage of this benefit.
Claims data from our insurance carriers Aetna and UnitedHealthcare showed that in some areas, as many as 60 percent of eligible women had not had a mammogram in the past two years. And of nearly 1,000 eligible UPSers, more than 81 percent had not had a colonoscopy in the past 10 years.
In addition to saving lives, preventive screenings save money. Illnesses and conditions caught in their early stages are much less expensive to treat. And long-term outcomes are much improved. For a self-insured company, holding down health care costs while improving the overall health of UPS people are key to keeping the plan viable and sustainable.
To promote greater use of health care screening, the UPS communication team developed the “Be Your Hero” campaign. The theme plays off the idea of superheroes coming to the rescue: Empowered and confident, they swoop in, solve problems and save people from imminent danger. By taking charge and knowing the status of key health measures, each of us can take appropriate action.
We chose to focus on four screenings that together affect the largest percentage of our insured population: annual physical, annual mammogram, well-woman, and colonoscopy. Using the screening guidelines outlined by the American Medical Association, our primary goal was to achieve a five percent increase in use of the preventive screening benefit by our eligible population....
