Front-line health care professionals like doctors and nurses are generally held in high esteem by the public. However, medical laboratory professionals often don’t enjoy the same level of appreciation because they are not seen by the public and their connection to patient care is not visible.
The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is a national, nonprofit organization that acts as the professional society for Canada’s medical laboratory professionals. As articulated in our mission statement, a major part of CSMLS’s mandate is to “expand CSMLS’s sphere of influence…by promoting understanding and awareness of the medical laboratory professional’s role in health care.”
A winning campaign
This campaign won a 2015 Gold Quill Award of Excellence for graphic design and was named a “Best of the Best” entry in the communication skills division. For more than 40 years, IABC’s Gold Quill Awards program has evaluated the work of communication professionals around the globe, recognizing the best of the best in the profession.
Our members share a strong sense of professional pride, but often feel forgotten and under-appreciated, as their contribution to the health care system is often overlooked. This sense of invisibility has led to cynical and jaded attitudes in parts of the profession.
The lack of awareness and professional recognition also has a negative impact on the workplace dynamics in hospital settings. Members of other health care professions can appear to look down on lab professionals, or to not appreciate the skill and knowledge required in the role. Our members feel they are considered as the lesser of their colleagues in other professions such as medicine and nursing. This feeling also affects their ability to advocate with hospital administration when it comes to budget, resources and space....
